Plates
and the Law
It’s against the law to alter the registration
plates on your car in any way. You are not allowed
to make them look like anything other than the actual
registration number on your V5C Registration Document.
Neither may you use black plates on modern cars.
Some people position the bolt for the number plate
next to one of the numbers to make it looks like a
letter.
In no way do we condone the altering of plates or the
reconfiguring of the spacing between the letters and
numbers on the plates we sell.
Interestingly, as a result of DVLA’s selling
of plates that suggest words and names – although,
of course, it is not legal to change them to read the
word or name they suggest – there is now a very
potent market for plates that cryptically suggest words
and names other than the actual registration; and whenever
I drive through Swiss Cottage in North London I marvel
at the volume of cars with totally altered plates.
Many also have black backgrounds and different fonts
from those legally allowed.
